As part of the two-day international conference called "France-Armenia: Historical and Cultural Dialogue," the National Library of Armenia's large exhibition hall is presenting, for the first time, unique samples of French and Armenian ancient literature and press published in France that were sourced from the Intangible Literature Department. The Intangible Literature Department of the National Library of Armenia preserves 2692 units of French literature, a small part of which is exhibited in the large exhibition hall. The oldest French book exhibited is “Les Histoires et Chroniques du monde” de Jean Zonaras (Paris, 1583). The collection includes many dictionaries, encyclopedias, historical and travel works.
The earliest French book preserved in the collection is from 1552. The "Universal Cosmonautics" was published in Paris. The History of the Christianity of the Ethiopians and Armenians, published in The Hague, Netherlands in 1739, was also on the list of books exhibited. Francis Bacon's "New Atlantis" published in Paris in 1702, the 4th volume of Denis Diderot's "Encyclopedia" published in Paris in 1754, and Plutarch's works published in 1787 were also included in the exhibited literature.
By the way, the first Armenian work printed in Paris in the 17th century was included in Claude Duret Bourbonnais's "Treasure of the History of the Languages of the World" published in 1613, in which the Armenian woodcut alphabet was included in the section dedicated to the Armenian language. In 1633, the second edition of Francis Rivola's "Armenian Dictionary" (Armenian-Latin) was published at the Imperial Printing House in Paris, which was the first Armenian book published in Paris.
