The field of library terminology in Armenia was completely formed under the influence of the Russian library and bibliographic school. The first Russian-Armenian and Armenian-Russian dictionary of library terms was published in 1950. It was compiled by the famous librarian Aram Babayan and edited by academician Gurgen Sevak. Library dictionaries typically include not only terminology related to librarianship, bibliography, and automation; but also cover the areas of publishing and printing, book history, graphics, literature, telecommunications, and other issues that editors may find useful for librarians.

In the 1980s, a dictionary was compiled using the same bilingual principle, prepared by the head of the library research department of the National Library, Tsovik Mikaelyan, and an employee of his department, Tatevik Navasardyan. The editor was the famous linguist, and academician Edward Aghayan. The dictionary was ready for publication in the early 1990s, but it was published only in 2001 due to a lack of funds. It covers about 1600 terms in librarianship, and bibliography, publishing, computers, and other sciences. At the beginning of the 21st century, in connection with the digitalization of libraries and the digitization of collections, the problem arose of creating a new library dictionary that would reflect new library realities and create the basis for unified approaches to the use of library terminology in automated systems. The International Association of Armenian Librarians and Archivists (IAALA) recently began an online discussion about this initiative.
