Let's return to Paris of 1950s with Eric Rohmer's film debut, The Sign of the Lion. The musician's struggle for his work and life against the backdrop of city streets transports today's moviegoers to a bygone era, where history lurks on every corner. On May 7, the next film of the Cinema Club, The Sign of the Lion, was shown at the Tamanyan Hall of the National Library of Armenia. American musician Pierre Veserlain's life is turned upside down after an unexpected discovery — his wealthy aunt left an inheritance not to him, but to his cousin.

The Sign of the Lion is an early film of the French New Wave, released in 1959, that explores existentialism and alienation. This film launched Eric Rohmer's distinguished career as a film director and also set the stage for his later and famous works. Film director and film critic Garegin Zakoyan, speaking about the film, noted that Rohmer’s art is unique. Then there was a discussion in the hall about how cinema differs from other arts. “Cinema is the only art that can play with time as it wants” — Zakoyan noted at the end of the discussion. The film critic emphasized that by depicting one day in a person’s life, one can tell a truly fascinating story and even conduct social analysis.

Let us add that the cinema club of the National Library of Armenia has been operating for the third year in collaboration with the public organization for the development of cinematic culture “Filmadaran” and the French Embassy in Armenia / French Institute.
