Dec 10, 2025 Cineclub

This year's Cine-Club concluded with the world's most peculiar, strange, and unusual comedy: the equally renowned Jacques Tati's "My Uncle." Jacques Tati's timeless masterpiece, Mon Oncle (1958), became a defining feature of French cinema with its nuanced humor and social commentary. The contrast between Monsieur Hulot and his family's traditional, warm-hearted lifestyle and the robotic, "perfect" modern world is depicted in the movie. The Oscar for "Best Foreign Language Film" went to Tati's film, which is still relevant today.
The film has almost no traditional dialogue. In order for the audience to understand the plot through movement, auditory details, and surroundings, Tati deliberately picked the "visual humor" format. This strategy became his trademark and had an impact on numerous directors in the future.
The French Institute of Armenia, the French Embassy, and the non-governmental organization Filmadaran have been hosting the French cinema-focused Cine Club at the National Library of Armenia for the past four years. The club ends this year with a screening of five timeless French masterpieces. Beginning in March 2026, we shall gather in the spacious and hospitable National Library hall.
