Thousands of studies have been written about the Armenian Genocide. Genocide memorials were erected, sculptures and paintings were created, novels and other works of art were written, films were made, and songs were composed.
The National Library of Armenia organized a public lecture by the outstanding Syrian-Armenian journalist, author of philological and historical-political studies Avo Gatrjian, at which the author presented his research “The Impact of the Armenian Genocide on Music.” The massive single-volume edition contains extensive materials from the end of the 19th century to 1915-1923. These are about 200 songs about the Genocide, more than 50 classical pieces of music, as well as about 150 other pieces of music, including those written for films.
In the Soviet and post-Soviet periods, the Armenian public was mostly familiar with national-patriotic songs about Andranik Ozanyan, Gevorg Chaush, Garegin Nzhdeh and others. The lecturer revealed unfamiliar songs to the audience and demonstrated musical genres about the Genocide. In the National Library of Armenia, you can read Avo Gatrjian's book “The Impact of the Armenian Genocide on Music,” published in Aleppo in 2010, as well as other studies he wrote.
