The National Library of Armenia hosted a screening of the next film of the Cinema Club Contempt, based on the novel of the same name by Alberto Moravia. “Although French director Jean-Luc Godard relied on the novel when creating the film, this did not stop him from completely breaking away from the original source,” said film scholar Garegin Zakoyan, founding president of the public organization for the development of film culture “Filmadaran” before the screening.
According to the cameraman, director, and screenwriter, Godard is a director “immersed in cinema,” with realistic views, thoughts, a variety of subjects, and stylistic features, which gives his films new colors and new content. “If you watch even a single one of Godard's films, it's nearly impossible to form an accurate impression of him. Godard and other French directors were the trailblazers in cinema history, demonstrating a deep understanding and appreciation of the medium's evolution. They deeply revered the works of their predecessors while fearlessly innovating to introduce new forms into films.,” Zakoyan noted.
Contempt touches upon the interesting relationships between a man and a woman, how love can turn into contempt. The main scenes of the film were shot on the street, which, according to the cinematographer, "brought them closer to life." For the third year in a row, the French Embassy and the French Institute of Armenia, together with the public organization Filmadaran, are organizing film screenings dedicated to French cinema at the National Library.
