“There was a green valley, and in it a spring. Ando did not know where this valley was. In that green valley a red horse was grazing. No one would know that this horse was Alkhon. The horse wandered around the valley, grazed, drank water, chased away flies with its tail, sighed and lay in the sun in the green valley, like a dead man…” Grant Matevosyan, Alkhon.
Today, February 12, is the birthday of Grant Matevosyan, a great writer of our time. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the writer’s birth. On the occasion of the anniversary, the National Library of Armenia organized a public lecture. Associate Professor of the Department of History and Literary Criticism of Modern Armenian Literature at Yerevan State University, Candidate of Philological Sciences Armenuhi Arzumanyan gave a lecture on the topic “Meaningful Streams of the Symbolism of the Image of a Horse in Grant Matevosyan’s Stories”.
Analyzing the writer's stories “My Horse, My Horse”, “Orange Pony”, “Alkhon” and “Green Field” in the context of the topic raised, the speaker made remarkable generalizations about the writer Matevosyan, his life philosophy, his path from studying animals to studying humans. Arzumanyan also drew parallels with other works of the writer dedicated to animals, in particular, with the story Buffalo, as well as with Bakunts' short story White Horse.
Another acquaintance with the world of Matevosyan turned out to be pleasant and instructive, so it was no coincidence that an interesting conversation began between the speaker and the participants of the event.
