The National Library of Armenia received the Arabic edition of the memoir “The Window of My Life” by Egyptian-Armenian journalist Thomas Gorguissian. The book was published by Cairo’s “Al Shourouk” publishing house in January 2025. Thomas Gorguissian has more than 50 years of journalistic experience, 30 of which he has lived in the United States. Mr. Gorguissian is a correspondent for the Egyptian “Al Ahram” and other newspapers. He writes articles on political and cultural topics. This is his third book. According to the author, the book presents a mosaic of the history of an Armenian family that survived the genocide, the fates of people, and the life of Egyptian-Armenians.
The book is written through the eyes of an eyewitness, not a researcher. The author touches on the role of Armenians in the history of Egyptian culture and Egypt in the history of Armenian culture. He presented the visits of Martiros Saryan and Komitas Vardapet to Egypt in 1911. It left a significant mark on Saryan’s work, who painted his paintings “Egyptian Masks”, “Walking Woman” and “Night Landscape, Egypt”. It is interesting that Komitas Vardapet also visited Egypt in the same 1911, and gave concerts and lectures in Alexandria and Cairo.
The eloquent titles of the chapters of the book “Cairo, which will live with me” and “Washington, where I live” indicate that it is written in a documentary and artistic style. Numerous photographs from the personal archive are presented. Tovmas Gorgisyan’s book is a valuable contribution to those studying the life of Egyptian Armenians.
