The film “Jules and Jim” by the Cinema Club concluded the spring-summer season of film screenings at the National Library of Armenia. “Jules and Jim” is about the “greed” of a woman, as defined by film expert Garegin Zakoyan, the founding president of the public organization for the development of film culture “Filmadaran.” He noted that the film received high praise from the director of the “New Wave,” Godard.

“The film is very innovative in form and style. Although it presents historical events (late 19th century - early 20th century), you do not notice this when watching it; you get the impression that this is a description of the 60s and 70s of the 20th century,” the expert said. The film tells the story of two friends who lived in Paris before the First World War: Jules from Austria and Jim from France. One day, they see an old statue in a museum and “fall in love” with it. Soon, a woman who is very similar to this statue appears in their lives and charms them. For many years, the friends wait in vain to see which of them she will choose. Catherine declares that she loves one, then the other, and then both.

The film is an adaptation of the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by French writer Henri-Pierre Roche. In 2010, Empire magazine included the film in 46th place in its list of the “100 best films of world cinema.” For the third year in a row, a film club has been operating at the National Library of Armenia in cooperation with the Filmadaran NGO for the Development of Film Culture, the National Library, and the Embassy of France in Armenia/French Institute, presenting a selection of French films for film lovers. The films are shown in French with Armenian and English subtitles. The new season of French films will resume in mid-September.
