From June 14 to 16, the Annual General Meeting of the Directors of the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL) was held in Luxembourg. Since 1986, CENL has brought together Europe’s national libraries. Within the framework of this year’s theme, “Commemorating the Future,” discussions focused on the development trends of national libraries in the context of current challenges, particularly the role of national libraries in preserving Europe’s cultural heritage, the security and protection of cultural heritage institutions, Europe’s linguistic diversity, and cultural heritage in the era of artificial intelligence.
The Director of the National Library of Armenia, Anna Chulian, delivered a presentation titled “Preserving the National Language through Metadata Aggregation (The Armenian Experience in Global Bibliographic Systems),” presenting the experience of the National Library of Armenia and its ongoing efforts to represent Armenian linguistic and cultural heritage in international bibliographic systems.
Within the framework of the conference, a draft ethical guideline for the use of artificial intelligence in national libraries was also discussed, emphasizing the principles of transparency, copyright protection, human oversight, and responsible application.
The outcomes of the conference highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation among national libraries, preserving cultural heritage, and ensuring the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
