Today, the “Ciné” Club at the National Library of Armenia screened the film Portrait of a Lady on Fire, bringing together around 100 cinema lovers. Directed by Céline Sciamma, the film is considered one of the most subtle and influential works of contemporary French cinema. It received the Best Screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival, confirming its distinctive place in world cinema.

The film, which transports viewers to 18th-century France, reveals the delicate psychological connection that develops between an artist and her subject, transforming it into a profound story about memory, observation, and identity. Notably, the film is almost entirely devoid of musical accompaniment; silence here becomes a means of expression, emphasizing the characters’ inner tension and emotional world. At the same time, each frame is composed with painterly precision, creating an independent visual value of its own.

This gathering of the “Ciné” Club once again highlighted the library’s role as a vibrant cultural environment where literature, cinema, and the free exchange of ideas come together.
