As part of the National Library Week program, an event and literary exhibition dedicated to the 105th anniversary of the renowned Armenian librarian Arazi Tirabyan’s birth were held in the Reading Room of the Bibliography Department at the National Library of Armenia. Anahit Nalbandyan, Head of the Bibliography Department, welcomed the guests and delivered the opening speech. Naira Melkonyan, a long-time staff member of the Bibliography Department, spoke about Arazi Tirabyan’s life, activities, and works.
In October 1956, Arazi Tirabyan was appointed Director of the Republican Library named after Alexander Myasnikyan. Leading the library for nearly 33 years, the later years of his life became closely connected with the institution. During his tenure, Tirabyan demonstrated invaluable qualities both as a leader and as a person. The speaker noted that the "secret" of Tirabyan’s long tenure as director lay in his broad-mindedness, modesty, attentiveness and care toward people, and his unwavering readiness to help others. Under Arazi Tirabyan’s leadership, the library published landmark works, methodological bibliographies, and reference manuals that made significant contributions to the development of library science. Notably, the two volumes of Armenian book bibliography (1512–1800 and 1801–1850), bibliographies of Armenian periodical press, and bibliographies of periodicals and writers such as Mourj, Luma, Hovhannes Tumanyan, Avetik Isahakyan, and Hovhannes Shiraz were published. Additionally, the library released a three-volume bibliography of Armenian translations of world literature and a two-volume bibliography of Armenian writers’ translations into Russian. The library also compiled a two-volume archive of library science documents, alongside numerous books and manuals of bibliographic, research, methodological, and reference nature.
The event was attended by Rafik Ghazaryan, a librarian, bibliographer, and Vice President of the Armenian Library Association, who also spoke at the gathering. Having worked since 1971 at the then Alexander Myasnikyan Republican Library, he collaborated with Arazi Tirabyan for many years. Rafik Ghazaryan has written numerous articles about Tirabyan, which were, incidentally, exhibited in the Reading Room of the Bibliography Department.
For those distant from the National Library, managing it may seem like a calm and easy task. But this is only at first glance. It is enough to note that in the 85 years since the library gained its state status, 14 directors have succeeded one another. In terms of numbers, Arazi Tirabyan’s tenure accounts for 38.8% of that time. Arazi Tirabyan made a significant contribution to establishing centralized library systems, a process carried out in our republic between 1974 and 1980. During his leadership, the library developed and expanded its connections with diaspora organizations and individuals. Throughout his long and dedicated career, Arazi Tirabyan’s achievements have received recognition and appreciation.
In 1982, on the occasion of the library's 150th anniversary, it was awarded one of the Soviet Union's most prestigious honors—the Order of Friendship of Peoples. Arazi Tirabyan made a significant contribution to this achievement. Rafik Ghazaryan added that Tirabyan authored around 30 articles dedicated to everyday challenges and concerns, as well as to promoting libraries.
Nerses Hayrapetyan, an employee of the National Library of Armenia, also spoke about the organized exhibition, which, incidentally, was arranged by bibliographers who were hired during Arazi Tirabyan’s tenure as director. The meeting concluded with a summary by National Library Director Anna Chulyan, who spoke about the developments and changes that have taken place over the years in the library and library science, as well as the importance of the librarian profession.
