Today marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of the son of the famous French writer Alexandre Dumas. He is best known for his novel The Lady of the Camellias (1848, French: La Dame aux camélias). Dumas' son began writing at the age of 18. In 1847, his first poetry collection, Péchés de jeunesse (Sins of Youth), was published, followed by a series of short stories and novellas, partly influenced by his famous father.
Dumas' talent was fully revealed only when he began writing psychological dramas. In them, he reflected on the social and family life problems of his time and solved them in his own way, with courage and talent, making the performance of each of his plays an important social event. The series of brilliant dramas was opened by The Lady of the Camellias, originally written as a novel, and in 1852, after the author's persistent struggle with the censors, who did not recognize the play as too immoral. Having achieved success and recognition, Dumas did a lot of work on the development and promotion of laws protecting the rights of single mothers, divorced women, and children born out of wedlock. Even today, Dumas' novel The Ideal Lady is among the most-read books in Armenian libraries.
