The past of the National Library of Armenia would be less obvious to us without archival photographs. On August 19, the world celebrates Photography Day. The French government patented Louis Daguerre's invention on this day in 1839 and distributed it to the globe for free. The name of Louis Daguerre is included in the list of 72 French scientists, inventors and engineers whose great names are engraved in gold letters on the top of the first level of the Eiffel Tower.
World Photography Day is a great opportunity to pay tribute to famous photographers and the history of photography, and to talk about the successes of photographic equipment and programs. Many Armenian photographers were pioneers in their field: Andranik Kochar, Nemrut Baghdasaryan, Polish Armenian Ara Guler, Canadian Armenian Yusuf Karsh, American of Armenian descent Hari Kundakchyan, and many others. The National Library has a rich collection of photo albums, and books dedicated to the art of photography, which are always at your disposal.
