Jan 25, 2025 News Book Map of Armenia

bookmapdeceng
Due to changes in the readership of public libraries over the past decades, the titles of the books featured on the monthly book map of Armenia can be at least roughly guessed. The reason is that most readers are schoolchildren and students. So it is natural that books included in educational programs appear on the map in a certain month.

Meanwhile, independent and translated literature by contemporary authors must pave its way in a competitive struggle to appear on book maps. Those who follow our publications see on the map only the cover of the book that was the most popular in the main library of a particular region during the month. Meanwhile, the lists of the most read books, compiled according to the combined statistics of libraries, are completely different.

About 300 thousand readers currently use public library services, which is slightly less than 10 percent of the total population. By 2024, 15 libraries and library systems from all 10 regions of the Republic took part in compiling the lists of the most read books. The list always includes 100-110 books, regular authors: Raffi, Nar-Dos, Vardges Petrosyan, Agatha Christie, Alex Michaelides, William Saroyan, Remarque, Khaled Hosseini, Elif Shafak and many others.

Check out the top ten most popular books in Armenian libraries in December. As you can see, only two books are repeated in the combined lists of individual libraries and the combined list. These are the books in the 1st and 2nd positions of the list:

  • Vahan Totovents "Life on the Ancient Roman Road"
  • Ashot Aghababyan "Black Panther"
  • Alexander Shirvanzade "Chaos"
  • Jack London "Martin Eden"
  • Aldous Huxley "Brave New World"
  • Jose Saramago "Cain"
  • Goar Navasardyan "After Love"
  • Ruben Yesayan "13 km from the tunnel"
  • Vardges Petrosyan "The Last Teacher"
  • Ruben Yesayan "The monks have a secret"

Ashot Aghababyan's novels "Black Panther 1" and "Black Panther 2" were in second place on the list mainly due to the support of readers from Yerevan and the Tavush region. And also, thanks to the activity of teenage readers from Kotayk, Ararat, Vayots Dzor, in the Syunik region, the modern writer Ruben Yesayan entered the top ten for December with two books at once.
