Within the framework of cooperation between the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia and the National Heritage Institute of the French Republic, from November 26 to 30, the Director of the National Library of Armenia, Anna Chulyan, along with the directors of the Matenadaran and the Yeghishe Charents Literature and Art Museum, visited institutes of written heritage in France.
Members of the Armenian delegation visited the National Heritage Institute of France, the National Library of France, the National Archives, the Institute for Research and History of Texts, the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations, the National School of Chartes, the National Institute of Art History, and the Samuelian Bookstore in Paris. During the meetings and negotiations, collaboration issues and prospective projects were discussed with the heads and specialists of these institutes.
During the meeting with Gilles Peccoux, President of the National Library of France, and Jean-François Gozo, Director of International Relations, an agreement was reached to sign a memorandum of cooperation with the National Library of Armenia by the end of April 2025. Considering the diversity and richness of Armenian heritage published in France and the current shortage of materials in Armenia, it was agreed to supplement the National Library of Armenia’s digital repositories “Armenian Book” and “Armenian Press” with electronic versions.
An agreement was also reached to transfer annual data from the National Library of France’s collection to the National Library of Armenia, which will enrich the NLA’s "Armenica" collection with works published in Armenian or translated from Armenian, as well as Armenian studies materials produced in France. During visits to the National Library of France and the National Archives, meetings were held at the digitization center and the restoration and preservation department. At the digitization center, Armenian specialists familiarized themselves with the techniques and methodologies for digitizing various formats and types of materials. Discussions also took place regarding the preservation challenges of digitized collections.
The National Library of Armenia has reached agreements with all these French institutes of written heritage on experience exchange, professional development, and the organization of joint research projects and exhibitions.
