Film screenings as part of the "Hungarian Film Days" were held at the National Library of Armenia on October 13 and 14, in collaboration with the Hungarian Center. During the event, two notable works of contemporary Hungarian cinema were presented: the historical drama "Semmelweis" (2023), directed by Lajos Koltai, and the dramatic thriller "The Grandson" ("Az Unoka", 2022), directed by Kristóf Deák.
"Semmelweis"
The film tells the story of Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis, who, in 1847, attempts to uncover the causes behind the spread of childbed fever at a maternity clinic in Vienna. Facing resistance from the medical establishment of the time, he fights to prove his scientific discovery and save the lives of many women. The film explores the pursuit of scientific truth, professional courage, and the challenges involved in gaining acceptance for innovative ideas.
"The Grandson"
Rudi, the protagonist of Kristóf Deák’s film, faces a difficult family situation when his elderly grandfather falls victim to a telephone scam. Seeking justice, Rudi launches his own investigation—a journey that takes him beyond the confines of his ordinary life and forces him to re-evaluate his understanding of responsibility, justice, and human relationships. The film combines the tension of a thriller with the emotional depth of a family drama. Both films were made with the assistance of the National Film Institute of Hungary. Hungarian Film Days provided an opportunity to explore Hungary’s cinematic heritage and the thematic diversity of its contemporary cinema, revealing artistic interpretations of historical events, human values, and social issues.
