As part of the events dedicated to International Mother Language Day, on February 25 an exhibition of literature marking the 150th anniversary of the renowned Armenian linguist and academician Hrachia Acharian was opened at the National Library of Armenia. The exhibition was organized at the initiative of the staff of the General Reading Hall of the library. The opening remarks were delivered by the Head of the General Reading Hall, Narine Gevorgyan, who emphasized Acharian’s exceptional role in the development of Armenian linguistics, particularly in the field of dialectology. Within the framework of the event, a public lecture was delivered by Jemma Barnasyan, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor.

She provided a detailed overview of Hrachia Acharian’s work in dialectology, emphasizing its importance as a key discipline for studying the historical development of the Armenian language. The speaker also addressed the contemporary challenges facing the mother tongue, stressing the importance of linguistic and cultural responsibility, the preservation of linguistic identity, and the need to consciously respond to modern challenges.

The exhibition features Hrachia Acharian’s fundamental works, including dictionaries, dialectological and historical-linguistic studies, as well as scholarly articles, memoirs, and biographical materials about him. A separate section is dedicated to his dialectological works, which are of great value for the study, preservation, and scholarly systematization of the regional varieties of the Armenian language. Within the framework of International Mother Language Day, it is especially important to note that language is the foundation of our identity, and the work of scholars like Acharian helps us better understand and preserve our linguistic heritage. #HrachiaAcharian #150thAnniversary #MotherLanguage #Dialectology #NationalLibraryOfArmenia #NLA
