On March 28, we hosted the famous philanthropist and collector Denis von Meck at the National Library of Armenia. He gave a public talk titled "Tchaikovsky on the World Map." In addition to describing the long-standing friendship between Nadezhda von Meck and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the family historian—as he calls himself—introduced the attendees to the activities of the "Nadezhda von Meck International Charitable Foundation" he founded. He also shared biographical episodes about his relationships with von Meck, the Tchaikovskys, the military writer and poet, Lieutenant General Denis Davydov, and the renowned Armenian architect Alexander Tamanyan. Tchaikovsky made five trips to Tbilisi and the Caucasus, according to Denis von Meck. He was profoundly moved by Armenian spiritual music and singing when he visited an Armenian church in Tbilisi during one of his trips there. The speaker gave the National Library several volumes that he or his nonprofit organization had edited and assembled. Both the famous composer's and the von Meck family's stories are told in these novels.
